    NATIONAL/CHAPTER AWARD

    What is, if any, are the differences between a" National" top flight award as opposed to a "chapter" top flight award being bestowed upon ones car and judged by the NCRS ? My car is to be judged by the NCRS in a chapter meet, and I was recently advised not to get all excited or worried because "IT IS AFTER ALL, ONLY A CHAPTER JUDGING". Is there more exacting requirements for a National judging as opposed to Chapter event? Or more specifically, is a top flight award ,a top flight award, regardless of where it was awarded?

    Normally you will have less experienced judges at a Chapter meet than you will at a Regional or at the Nationals. As a result the judging can be more exacting when you attend a Regional or National and things that are not observed at the chapter level will be noted at the higher levels of judging.

      What Bob said is on the money, but pay attention to his 'generally' disclaimer because that's really the crux of the matter. All levels of judging at NCRS (chapter, regional, national) use the same basic foundation (rules, rule books, score sheets), but everything that's printed is really a supplement to the personal knowledge of individual judges. That means WHO shows up to judge WHAT has an impact.

      Since 1998, the fledgeling UK Chapter has done nothing but chapter level meets as they're isolated from the rest of the NCRS community. However, these meets have been attended by 'heavy hitter' judges combining vacation with helping hand knowledge transfer (folks like Vinnie Peters, Chuck Berge, myself and MANY others), thus those particular chapter meets have been very much the equivalent of an NCRS regional/national meet....

      Along the vein of who shows up and knowledge of the individual judge(s), I can guarantee you that at ANY meet (NCRS, NCCB, Chevy/Vettefest) you can expect BOTH errors of commission and errors of ommission (scored the right thing wrong and scored the wrong thing right). This is because the process is basically a human issue. So, one should take ANY judging results as literal Gospel.

      The more times you have your car judged and the wider you range your travels to campaign the car, the more you're going to find out/learn simply because you get more 'calibrated eyeballs' on the car! I can guarantee you if you take an NCRS Mark of Excellence award winning car to Bloomington, they will find a thing or two others missed. The same goes in reverse (Gold Certificate car brought to NCRS).

      So, the 'correct' mindset for playing this 'game' (having a car judged or using a judging score sheet to appraise a car) is to ASSUME some things were missed and the more times the car was judged at different times/places, the more accurate the assessment of it (arithmetic mean may not change appreciably but the standard deviation gets tighter).

        I wonder if another factor might play into this. Chapter events, in my experience, have less cars to be judged than regional or national. That being the case. more time can be spent on each car. I recall that trying to get through a class of 10
        cars in one day was kind of rushed. Is it possible that cars would be more carefully examined at a chapter event? Just my ramblings....

          I found that judging at the chapter was a great introduction into flight judging. My first chore was to read the judging manual. The reason I had my car judged at the chapter level first was to find the plus and minus points of my car. Once it was judged (2nd Flight)I made the decision to restore what it needed (and I could afford) to take it to a regional meet. At the regional level the judges were more experienced and that experience sped up the time required to judge cars. Not only are they more experienced, but they also had the time to go into more details of how items were judged. Why points were given and taken and even suggested tips to correct the items that needed it. I felt that for the judging fee where else can you get a bunch of knowledgeable people to go thru your car and help to let you know what you have.
          Best part of judging was meeting new people and making new friends. Is it for every one ??? It works for me. I did get top flight at regional. I know that judging can bring out the best and worst in people, but it just a hobby to me, not life and death. JMHO

            By limiting the number of cars to be judged and making sure that members with and with out experience share the judging duties it can be a pleasant experience. I have judge when I don't have time to take a p--- and other times the pace was less rushed. But I am learning each time I judge. Proper planning should make for a good time for all. My two cents on this subject.

              I have been a exterior judge for 15+ years. I have judged bowtie & flight.Chapter meets can have master judges & 1st time judges. It is the best way to get your feet wet both as a judge & car owner. At Chapter meets I will tell the owner and make notes on the sheets of deducts but not take as many points .I belive if an owner does well at a Chapter and leaves with the correct information to fix his problem areas.he will want to go on to regionals and nationals. A top flight is still quite an achievement at any level. To get a mark of excellence award you will go through at least 12 teams of judges + the p.v. guys. In most cases you will have been judged by some of the best people in the country.something to be very proud of. go for it ! Bill

                Bill, somewhere on this site I read you will get points for having the NCRS sticker on your vehicle at the time of judging. I know it can not be many, but it might cover a mirror, I don't know if it is even true or the guy was pulling my leg. I'll play the sucker here and ask, if it is true, where should I display it or, does it not matter as long as it is there?

                  Greg,
                  You will recieve 3 points for an NCRS sticker, 3 points for a fire extinguisher, and 3 points for a battery shut off switch. If you have all 3 you will recieve 10 points. It's the best NCRS deal going.
