    Battery /Storage Door Trim

I've replaced the carpets in my 81 but I cannot figure out how to get the plastic surround trim off the battery & storage doors to replace the carpet there. I do not see any fasteners. Is the trim glued on or is the carpet glued onto the door and just slid under the edge of the trim? What is the secret?

    Re: Battery /Storage Door Trim

Charlie, I was putting a new battery in my 71 last week, and happened to damage the trim around the center compartment door with my drop light. I believe that your car has two compartment doors as opposed to three in earlier cars, but I'm assuming attachment is similar. I didn't study it on my car, but I did notice at least one small countersunk screw around the edge of the trim. I beleive that these screws are the only thing attaching the trim, though it is possible that glue from the carpeting is playing a role as well.

I replaced the door compartment frames, trim and carpet on my 82 recently. The doors were molded in place in the door frame. To replace the frame required it to be destructively removed and the new frame replaced with small countersuck screws around the circumference of the door. Replacement door frames were relatively inexpensive. Replacing the carpet without destructively removing the frame would require pulling the carpet out of the door frame and scaping out residual carpet stuck in the door molding. Then poking the new carpet under the frame

The inner frame should be easily freed by loosening the small counter-sunk screws around the edge of the frame. This should not destroy the frame. The carpet may be lightly glued to the lid, but can be pulled free. If the frame needs painting, this can also be done before re-installing.

Thanks Steve, I suspected this is how it was assembled.
