    C1 Reproduction Tires

B.F. Goodrich Silvertown, and Firestone Deluxe Champion are two of four possibilities of OEM Tires for my 61. Both are available in reproduction as sold by Coker Tire. Would either be the same on points within the NCRS judging system or is one better than the other? Any help from C1 exterior judges, car owners etc. would be appreciated.

    Re: C1 Reproduction Tires

    Dave -

As far as I know, either one is acceptable, and will get the same 20% standard deduction; I used the BFG's for judging on my '57.

Ditto for me. I used the BFG tires on my 60.

          Re: Why the deduction?

          Dave,
The judging guide has standard deductions for certain items like tires, batteries etc. Without looking, I imagine there is a 20% deduct for reproduction tires. These standard deductions help to make the judging process much more consistent from judge to judge and meet to meet.

Re: And the difference between repro and NOS is?

Don't all repro tires today have the DOT stamp on the sidewall? NOS tires don't have this.

                A modest proposal...

As I recall, the offending letters stick out. Seems to me, a couple of hours with a Dremel tool and some fine wet sandpaper could save those who care about $1300...

There are other variations as well, depending on the year of tire you are looking at and the specific repro. Some include the use of Polyester cord vs nylon, load ratings on the tire etc, all making a repro "eaily distinguishable" from a judging perspective. Some of these issues can be creatively "improved" as mentioned. The judging hit is intentionally light to acknowledge the "wearout" of the tire systems.
