    C-3 Frame Weight

Any well educated guesses on the weight of a stripped 68 frame?

    Thanks,

When I shipped mine to Michigan I was told it was 215 lbs.

      Re: Hmm....

That means that my frame weighs as much as I do.

Naa, probably less considering all the hole in it!

Just in dragging mine around the garage I figured it to be maybe in the three to four hundred pound range.

I'm trying to get pricing from CA. to NY. and the prices provided to ship from there to here is really REALLY scary.

Even one way rental trucks costs more than common carriers even with unlimited miles.

It really stinks living in the rust belt!!!

Thanks for getting back to me Dave,

      Chuck

        Re: Hmm....

I did not weigh it. That was what I was told by the frame shop I shipped it to. The driver and I picked it up and to put it on the semi-trailer and my end felt like about 100 lbs +/-.

Caledonia Classics in Belding, Michigan rebuilds frames. They can either do yours so you get the same one back, or they will exchange.

I'd give them a call, as it's 1/3 the distance.

That's a possibility, I'll give the Caledonia folks a call and feel it out.

I would tend to agree with you Dave that the frame being boxed the way it is lighter than would be expected. I was amazed at the strength and rigidity of even my rusted out frame versus the actual weight. The more I think about it, the more I want to agree with you that it very well be only a couple of hundred pounds.

This darned California frame is so appealing to me as it is offered for only $500.00 and is stated as being straight and rust free. I have some very knowledgeble folks taking a look at it for me just to confirm these facts.

The only thing going for my frame is that it wasn't hit. Other than that there just isn't enough to make it economical to salvage in my mind. The more I look at it, the more I want to do the right thing and put a clean frame back under it.

Mine is so soft that even the top of the frame by the #3 mount where the chassis numbers would be is rotted through for about a foot.

Thanks again for getting back to me, I appreciate it.

Chuck - I have done quite a bit of heavy shipping lately (2300# Bridgeport mill from NJ to AZ) plus other things, and I have had good luck with internet rates at ABF Freight with their internet rates (about 50% off) http://www.abfs.com/Default.asp?bhcp=1 and also Freightquote at http://www.freightquote.com Both have given me good service, and freightquote lets you compare carriers before booking. Worth a look, in the case of the frame, the size will get you more than the weight... good luck!...Craig

                      For the advise and input.

147 shur beats the two or three hundred pounds I was originally toying with.

                      Appreciate the feed back folks,

                        Re: Good Frame News!

I can get the frame shipped for less than $300.00 Now I'm one happy dude!!

Now it's time to close the deal before it falls into the cracks.

I just want to say thanks to everyone on this thread for the very helpful input.

To the folks in California who took the time out of their busy days to help me verify that this was a worthy deal, my humble thanks to them as well.

It's nice to know that the spirit of helpfulness is very much alive and well.
