Hi, I am looking for some guidance on a problem with my 185hp, 100000 mile 77. The original problem was a miss at all rpm ranges and an occasional cough back up the carb. The carb problem sounds more like a loud snap than a backfire or cough. Compression check is 125-130 psi through all the holes. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Timing is correct and I just put a new kit in the rotten-chester. The car still has a nagging miss and snaps back up the carb occasionally - it is also getting about 5 miles to the gallon. Any ideas? Thanks Steve

Re: Nagging miss in my 77
Your compression looks a little low, but it's even and not low enough to indicate a burned valve.
You could get a scope analysis of the HEI or just rebuild it with a new pickup coil, module, and advance weight pivot bushings. Also, regrease the upper bushing grease well, carefully check all the connections, and make sure you reinstall the drive gear with the dimple pointed in the same direction as the rotor tip.
Most guys just ignore the HEI until it fails hard, but after a 100K miles a refresh isn't out of the question. The parts cost to rebuild is is less than $100, and you can buy them almost anywhere from several manufacturers.
