I have a 67 coupe that I bought years ago with the idea of using it for a daily driver. It is currently equipped with a 327/350 with some restamped numbers, factory air, ps,pb and 4 speed. I have never considered the possibility that the car was anything other than what it is now, with the exception of possibly having been a base engine car dressed as a 350. Now I'm not so sure. I have found a lot of evidence that the car may have been a big block. The car underwent a major restoration, probably in the late 70's/early 80's. It was in need of cosmetic "freshening" when I bought it, but pretty sound mechanically. Being one to not fix what's not broke, I haven't done a lot of mechanical work on the car and probably haven't looked at it very carefully under the hood until today. Here are the things I have found that make me suspicious that it may have been a BB:
1. Seven leaf rear spring
2. HD bolt style U-joints
3. Rear sway bar
4. 7/8" front sway bar (not sure about the front springs)
5. Hood support was originaly attached on the left side. Current rt side bracket is not factory installed. Hood has different color gelcoat than the rest of the car and the front end has never been damaged. I've always thought it was not original.
6. Over flow tank bracket is not factory installed
7. Steel oil pressure line
8. Radiator support appears to have been modified for SB radiator. There ae mounting holes for brackets on each end. Haven't taken the radiator out to look at the bottom
9. Tach has 6K redline which I think is consistant with 327/350 and 60# oil gauge, but a previous owner made some remark to the effect that the cluster might not be original. Don't remember if there are dates on the back of the cluster or not, been years since I had it out.
If it turns out this car was a factory BB, I probably will file that info away and continue to drive it as is. The car runs looks and drives almost as new, and I'm not a real BB fan anyway. I am , however, very curious and would like to see some opinions and perhaps some other things I could check.
