    66-67 BB Alternator

Ok, I work for an ac-delco distributor of over 40 years, and I've been looking around for nos parts on my down time, well I've came across some Nos voltage regulators that go to an alt. #1117777 That should be for a 66-67 well that comes up in my books as a 20 DN, well looking in my picture books a 20 DN doesn't look like it belongs on a passanger car, It has an SAE 4 in mount, and is more geared towards a heavy duty truck. My 1969 catlog is showing that these would go on either a camaro or vette BB in these years. I would like to see a under hood shot of a top flight car just to see how these mount. I can get a scan of my catalog in the morning if this helps anyone.

    Thanks
    Donny

    Donny------

All 1963-68 Corvettes used a 10 DN series Delcotron. A 20 DN series was NEVER used on any Corvette, big block or small block. Although many different alternator part numbers were used during the 63-68 period and amperage ratings ranged from 37 to 61 amps, ALL were 10 DN series. From 1969 onward, the internal regulator SI series alternators were used.

All 1964-68 Corvettes, except a few 1965-66 models equipped with solid state, transistorized regulators, used regulator GM #1119515. The transistorized regulator, GM #1116368, was used on 65 Corvettes with transistor ignition, AC and 60 amp alternators.

For 1966, it is possible that transistorized regulator GM #1116378 was used for L-79 engines with transistorized ignition and AC.

Ahh, you hit it straight on the head!!!! What I have is 3 of a regulater part# 1116378/d639. I still find it wierd in my parts book from that vintage they're listing a 1117777 as equiptment on the corvette/camaro. And I know the 1117777 is a 20dn, and as I was saying is way wrong for a passanger car, the 20 dn replacement is an 30si which typically goes on school buses. I'll scan my book for you guy's tomarrow and we'll delve into it further.

      Thanks

Well, i mis read the book as far as vettes go. It's listing the 1117765 62 amp Alt. for 63-66 as using this externial reg. D639. The Camaro appliction comes up as 1117777 62 amp using the same reg. for 67-68. I can provide scans of my 1969 delco remey catalog if this helps anyone. I still find it weird that when I bring up these 2 alt. #'s they come up as 20Dn's. Anyone got a pic of a 1117765 alt???

          Donny-----

GM did catalog the GM #1111765 alternator for some 62-66 Corvette applications. However, this unit was never used in a Corvette. It was used in some 62-66 Chevrolet passenger car applications, mostly for police and taxi service, but it was also available as the HD alternator option for these years, so other Chevrolet passenger cars could have received it, too. It was a 62 amp unit and of series 20 DN. When optionally installed in passenger cars, it was known as RPO K-81. RPO K-81 was never available in Corvettes, though. For awhile, GM "thought" that it was, but it wasn't.

In 1967, alternator GM #1111777 replaced the GM #1111765 for all RPO K-81 applications, including being part of the police and taxi packages. Once again, though, it was never available in Corvettes.

The largest amperage alternator used in any 63-75 Corvette was 61 amps. 1963-68 were series 10 DN and 1969-75 were of the series 10 SI. In about 1976, the series 12 SI began to be used for 63 amp applications and in about 1979, the series 15 SI was used for 63 amp applications. The series 12 SI and series 15 SI are similar to the series 10 SI in configuration, but have progressively larger cases.

The Delcotron series 20 DN used a much larger case and was configured significantly different than the 10 series. The tubular case section was manufactured of fabricated steel, painted black, and had 3 rows of cooling holes. The end frames were natural aluminum.

Wow, thanks for the help you guy's are great. As you were saying earlier that this regualtor #D639/GM #1116378 was used on 66 L79's with TI and AC. As it looks in my catalog if it doesn't use D639/1116378 it would use D635 right, unless it's a 66 with a 1100742 alt, which would use a d663.

Joe, What type regulator was used for the 66' L-72 with TI?

As far as I know, just the usual electro-mechanical regulator as used on most other 66s.
