    Grounds

    Gentlemen:

I have a '62 (originally a 340hp) Corvette. Is there someone who can tell me where all the ground points are located for the electrical system? I'm not interested in the radio shielding grounds, i.e., exhaust to chassis, etc., just the grounds associated with the electrical system proper.

    Problem:

The car seems to "eat" regulators. First, the ammeter starts flickering from 0 (center) to the "charge" side of the gauge. When this happens, the water temperature gauge, which normally stays at 170-180 starts to climb way up (guessing it to be around 220-240 degrees). When the ammeter stops flickering, the temperature gauge reading goes back down to normal. The first thing I did was check the regulator, and found the contacts of the current relay to be BADLY pitted. I filed them, and the problem went away but only for a while, then returned. I then replaced the unit with replacement regulator from Corvette Central with the problem again going away - - - for a while, and then returned. I then put the car away for the Winter last year. As I drove it in the garage for the last time, the ammeter was not flickering, but was pinned to the right with the temperature gauge reading very high. So, it appears the relay contacts may be welded (I haven't looked at it since - - domestic projects must come first!). Unless you folks have some better ideas as to the problem, I would like to check the grounds. My thought: Maybe, because of a bad ground somewhere, current is trying to find a ground and it is doing it through the temperature gauge, through the sender, to the block (???) - - I'm running out of ideas. I have noticed, however, that a prior owner had been under the dash, as the harness has been tampered with. There are two non-GM white wires with ring lugs coming out of the harness and are grounded to the steering column cover mounting bracket (?????). Maybe it would be bestjust to replace the harness(?????).

Any light you can shed would be appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Re: Grounds

Bill: I have had somewhat similar problems with my 1960 Corvette. Particularly regarding the temp guage rising sharply. I found that the contact points in my ignition switch were blackened badly from wear. I cleaned the contact points of the switch and reinstalled. It worked for a couple of years but is now acting up again. I probably need to replace it. Keep in mind that all of the current for the guages comes through the ignition switch.

        Re: Grounds

My '61 had been converted to an alternator and ate regulators and batteries for several years. Luckily I kept buying lifetime parts until Checker and Sears decided they weren't going to keep honoring the warranties. I don't recall if my gauges acted up, but I never could find the shorts. I finally replaced the wiring harness and converted it back to a generator and have not had any problems since. Maybe it was the mere fact that I cleaned all of the connections when I installed the new harness. As I recall the wiring diagram in the manual was very accurate and there were no additional grounds other than those shown.
