C3 Eavap/heater box black goop sealant

I recently reconditioned the evap enclosure on my 69... There was a black goop waxy sealant used to seal the upper box area where it bolts to the firewall... looks like it was in a liquid state when applied because it ran down the sides then dried... What is (was) this sealant and is there a substitute available today?

    Thanks

    John

    John,
I rebuilt my evaporator box on our 69 several years ago. At that time Dr. Rebuild carried the sealant you are looking for. It was a rope type sealant that had the consistancy of soft putty. Hope this helps. Thanks.

      Frank,

Thanks for the responce... but the ribbon sealant used between the "box" and the "firewall" is only part of the story... there is another black goop that was applied just along the top seam... after the box was fastened in place... It is similar (may be the same) to the goop used to seal the in the WSW area...

By the way, dark gray ribon sealant can still be purchased at the dealer... The stuff I got from Doc was actually brown... still worked though...!

      Thanks again!

Before you go to the dealer to buy that ribbon sealer at a hefty price. Go to your local Home Depot or Lowes. 3M makes the ribbon sealant and it can be found at either place in Black or Grey. As for the poured looking sealant that was used I have an idea but haven't tried it yet just to see how close it looks to the original sealant. If I try it and find that it looks correct I will post here on how to duplicate it.

John, I found a product at Home Depot called Knight Hawk All Season Rubberized Roof Repair made by U.S. Hickson Products LTD. It was in the roofing section and comes in an 18.5 oz spray can. The can accepts a thin tube(like the one on a can of carberator cleaner) and can be "dribbled" on to the top of the box with great accuracy. When it dries,it stays rubbery and turns a black color. I think it was about $2.00 for the can,but I remember the caps were very dusty, indicating this stuff has been on the shelf for a while and was not new stock. Hope this helps,Kieran #11373

Thanks... I was looking at some of the roofing products... such as the various sealants in a tube... I havent experimented with any of them yet... I guess I have something to look for by name now!

                Thanks again..

The dust on the cap is used to age the product for a more orginal look.
