Is there any test that can be done to tell whether or not casting numbers/dates are the real thing or if they have been forged ? I thought I remember reading an atricle about tapping them with a ballpeen hammer. If they fell off they were fake. Does that sound right to anybody ?? Thank you , Mike Chase
Yeah, you can tap them lightly, if they were made out of epoxy they'd come off. You could take a little thinner or carb cleaner on a rag & soak the area. Once you get the paint off, you'd be able to see if the number was doctored.
