    1958 -- "Signet Red" ?????

I have started the long process of going back together with my 58', and never really gave it much thought, until now, but my local PPG dealer is really having a hard time even "finding" code 506A for 1958 GM, in his computer base, or in other words "signet red" ??? They mixed me a color that their computer said was "close" -- but I don't want close -- I want to see "Signet Red" !!!!
They claim that in 1959 the "Roman Red" color also uses the 506A paint code --
but that the "red" in 59' is much darker ???? What they mixed for me really has an "orange" tint to it ??? Much "oranger" then I figured it should be ?? Much to my disbelief, After I painted the instrument cluster with it , it almost matched the "Al Knock interior" to perfection. (Still looks orange)!!! Can anybody out there tell me a correct paint type and code to take to the paint shop , so that I "know" I will get the correct "shade" of red.??? HELP

    Mick,

Roman Red is very orange in color. I'm not sure about Signet Red and question if the two are in fact the same formula.

I'm sure others here have the paint numbers you need. I suggest that you go to one of the older paint suppliers in your area, there is a supplier on Main Street in Springfield MA "AutoCraft Supply" who has the old numbers. They mixed Regal Turquiose for me in lacquer a short time ago, and they had the original formula in one of their reference books. Keep looking, you will find it.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Best Regards from (frozen) Connecticut,

    Mark

I will look in my computer when I get to the shop for a mixing formula, but I can tell you that Signet red is nothing even close to Roman Red. Signet red is almost a "pinkish" or "salmoney" red. Roman red is an orange red, but not quite as orange as modern torch red. Years back, I painted a 58 with Signet red, looked at it for a day, and then reshot it in roman red. Obviously, NCRS judging was not a consideration at the time.

        Addendum

I did a computer search, both on my own software and on the DuPont site. No luck with Signet Red. The code "506" does appear with 59-64 Riverside Red. "Riverside" and "Roman" red are the same code, only the name was changed for 63-64. For the info of those looking for "Roman Red" by name, you need to tell the paint store "riverside red" instead. You'll get the same color. I think Signet red was a one year color, but someone out there has the mixing formula and will eventually come through.

          Re: 1958 -- "Signet Red" ?????

Ed, thanx. The description you gave of "Signet Red" is exactly what I thought I might get. I bought a quart of it and experimented with my instrument cluster. It had a very "pinkish or Salmony" cast to it. Since it was a 58 only color I wasn't sure if I "remembered" it right. I must have had a better recollection of "Roman Red" as being the color I wanted. Am I to believe then, that a lot of the 58's I see painted red aren't "correct"? This paint I had mixed is a dead ringer for my new Red interior. I guess Al Knock had it right...huh? Thanx a bunch. I'll sit tight and see what rolls in. Mick

I don't know if it will help, but the Ditzler Number was 70826, Dupont was 2704-LH. It is a pinkish-Red color, not nearly Roman Red.

Bill : Thanx for the paint #'s . I will take these to the paint shop and see what they turn up ?? Ed Jennings reply about "signet" appearing to be a "pinkish" hue is what They mixed me last week. I really don't want to invest a lot of $$$ in paint , when it might not be the correct "shade" of red. It's like I told the guy at the paint shop, "I'm not painting a 75'LTD wagon "-- I really need to see what is considered "correct", before proceeding. Thanx -- mf
