    Flywheel weight for 283

Does anyone have any idea of the flywheel weight for a 283. I have a 61 Corvette that was missing the original 270 hp engine. I have built another engine and at the time used the flywheel from the incorrect engine. I have been unable to locate the correct casting number and or specs for a 1961 flywheel. My old cast iron flywheel has been resurfaced a couple of times and has some severe cracks. I checked with the GM parts house and they have obsoleted the flywheel and could not tell me if a 350 flywheel would work. Steel aftermarket flywheels are available in different weights with 30 lbs being the most common. My 40 yr old bathroom scale that suffered the indignity of several kids bouncing on it indicates my flywheel weighs about 25 lbs. I would like to achieve the "correct" performance using the correct weight flywheel. I do not know if my wheel has been resurfaced so much that it was originally a 30 lb flywheel. Then again, I do not know if a 30 lb flywheel will sap some of the engine acceleration. Any information out there?

    Doug----

I don't know what the weight of the flywheel is supposed to be for 283 cid engines. However, I would guess it to be in the 25-30 lb range. Chevrolet never used "lightweight" flywheels on production cars.

I believe that the correct casting number for the flywheel that you're after is 3729004. The last SERVICE PART NUMBER for this flywheel was GM #3986390, which was issued about 1970. As you've found out, this flywheel is discontinued and difficult to find. Even if you were to find a USED casting number 3729004, the chances are that it wouldn't be serviceable.

If I were you, I'd try contacting Northern Auto Parts. I haven't got their number or web-site handy, but I believe they're located in Iowa. I would think that a cast iron replacement flywheel should be available for this application since these flywheels weren't used in just Corvettes. A replacement flywheel ought to be configured close to, if not identical, to the original, although it obviously won't have a GM casting mark or number. Not too many folks will ever see that, though.

I have a possible source for an NOS flywheel, and I will e-mail you with that info. However, if they have one you can expect for it to be VERY expensive and I'd still suggest that you look into a replacement flywheel first.

Doug, The difference between me standing on the bathroom scales holding an original '56 flywheel and then not holding it is about 27 pounds. This flywheel should weigh same as a 283 ci flywheel. Might want to consider an aftermarket aluminum flywheel!

Doug: Joe is correct. #3729004 is the correct casting number. I verified on my 59 high horse fuelie. I just checked the weight and he is also correct with his estimate. It has been machined and checks out at 27 pounds.
