    C1 Kingpin Question

After replacing kingpins, the ST-12 tells you to check the clearance between the steering knuckle and the knuckle support. If the clearance is greater than .006", install one of the steel shims that comes with the kingpins. The clearance on mine is .008" - .009".

No matter how I try, I can't get a shim in there - even a little bit. The shims seem thicker than .008"-.009". Even if I could start the shim in there, I don't see how I could get it centered without damaging it. The ST-12 says to cut a used kingpin in half to use as a pilot. But I don't have any tools that could cut a kingpin.

Can somebody make me sleep better tonight, and tell me that a few thou isn't going to make any noticeable difference. Of course, the reason I'm replacing the kingpins in the first place is that the steering on my car was treacherous. I'd hate myself this Summer if all my Winter suspension and steering work was for nought.

    Re: C1 Kingpin Question

The last two sets of kingpins that I installed, I couldn't even start to get a .006 feeler into. I did some kingpins years ago that did require the shims. With patience, you could cut a kingpin in two with a bench grinder wheel, or just take one to a metal fab shop and ask them to saw it with a cut off wheel. If you have a Dremmel tool, the cut off wheels for one of those would cut a kingpin ,again with patience. A hacksaw or band saw won't touch it.

If you have a dial caliper or a michrometer, measure the shim and see what the thickness is. You can take a few thousandths off by placing some sandpaper on a piece of glass to get a flat surface and rubbing the shim on the paper.

I had to replaceone of my knuckle supports so I went ahead and installed new kingpin sets while I had it apart. I couldn't assemble the new parts without the assembly being very tight,so I took a large mill file and dressed the top of the spindle boss a few thousands so the completed assembly had a free swing. You might try that to get the necessary clearance to slip in the shim.
