After replacing kingpins, the ST-12 tells you to check the clearance between the steering knuckle and the knuckle support. If the clearance is greater than .006", install one of the steel shims that comes with the kingpins. The clearance on mine is .008" - .009".
No matter how I try, I can't get a shim in there - even a little bit. The shims seem thicker than .008"-.009". Even if I could start the shim in there, I don't see how I could get it centered without damaging it. The ST-12 says to cut a used kingpin in half to use as a pilot. But I don't have any tools that could cut a kingpin.
Can somebody make me sleep better tonight, and tell me that a few thou isn't going to make any noticeable difference. Of course, the reason I'm replacing the kingpins in the first place is that the steering on my car was treacherous. I'd hate myself this Summer if all my Winter suspension and steering work was for nought.
