    C3 VACUUM HOSE TAPE

I noticed on my vacuum hoses on my 72 a couple of places that were wraped with a black fiberous tape . I also noticed in the assembly manual various location for this tape. Is it still avaiable ? I have not been able to locate it .

I don't recall that this tape was black. It may have discolored with age. The tape that I've seen used was very similar to strapping tape which can be purchased in office supply stores. It can be strip cut and used to simulate the original application.

      Re: C3 VACUUM HOSE TAPE

I think he's talking about the black tape used to tie hose lines on the vapor recovery system (between PCV valve and charcoal cannister). It was a thin black form of cloth friction tape....

I looked high and low for similar tape and had two small samples to work with; one from what remained on my car another from a Chevy passenger car of the era. Finally bumped into a wiring harness vendor at Chevy/Vettefest (Eagle) who had searched high and low as well. He had a roll of the same stuff (only it was 4-inches wide) and was kind enough to wrap a few turns onto a Coke can I had for me. Still have a little bit left in ye olde stache downstairs--have to unwind and cut into thinner strips for authenticity.

Sorry, I never did find the source and everytime I'm in a hardware store I look....

I have a roll of this 4" tape and will check to see if the tube has a brand on it. It is industrial grade and close to original .

            1972 VACUUM HOSE TAPE

            John,

I can only "recall" seeing the clear strapping-tape like substance on 1970 Corvettes (It may be on prior years; I'm 70-72 only). I know that on late 71's and 72's I have not seen it. I have the front end support from a 70 in my basement, and it has this tape. The two 71's and 72 in our family do not.

I've found the cloth wiring tape in some hardware stores to be a "close" substitute to the black cloth tape used for the smog hoses and vacuum hoses for your car. It's not 100%, but it's OK. Far better than black plastic electrical tape.

It may very well be that the clear-ish, strapping tape was used only for 68-70 vacuum hose connections and the black, fabric tape used for later cars. However, since the hoses were delieverd to St. Louis as complete assemblies from whence they were manufactured, the tape is "part of an assembly" and I have no way to research it and determine exactly when the change-over occurred. The tapes may or may not have had a GM part number inasmuch as I doubt that the hose assemblies were produced internally by GM. But, it's possible that they were. In any event, the part number and specs for the tape, if any ever existed, have been lost in antiquity. Just another piece, albeit small, of Corvette history lost forever.

                  Joe,

I've typically seen the clear strapping tape at "junctions" such as T's in the line, the filter, the valve, etc. The black tape is usually used along the inner fender on the left to bind the hoses together. In 71/72, I usually see NO tape holding junctions together. In other words, the clear tape usage was "deleted" from the assembly, not substituted.

I'm using more "usuallys" and " " 's in posts as time goes on because I find that even at 35, my memory for some of this is getting crowded.

I found that clear tape, or sometimes the remainings, in the check valve after the filter, in the headlights/wiper vac system. In the solenoid below the dash of the wiper system and in some other in_the_dash vac connections.
