Re: Schematic's
Try Chicago Corvette Supply, Corvette Central, Eckler's, or any of the many Corvette specialty companies. They all stock the Corvette AIMs (Assembly Instruction Manuals) for each year. These AIMs contain very good wiring diagrams. I have personally re-wired a '58, '60, and '67 using the respective AIM.
Hope this helps.- Top

Terry gives good advice on AIM from NCRS merchandise in Cincy. BUT, the AIM will be a tad harder to read than the diagrams given in the Chevrolet Chassis Service manual and you WON'T get schematics....
This is a nomenclature issue. Schematic diagrams disclose the ENTIRE circuit under study (what happens inside each/every function block). What you get with AIM or CSM is a simple wiring diagram. It shows what wire (by guage and color code) routes where/how. This achieves the purpose Chevy intended (give simple schooling to service techs). BUT, it pre-supposes:
(1) Your wiring harness hasn't been cut into/modified (not a good
assumption with +30 year old cars that've been through multiple
owner hands). (2) You're going to repair by functional component swap/replacement.
With real McCoy schematic diagrams (I've called GM support line and been told the wiring diagrams are all there is -- I DON'T BELIEVE IT -- GM service research and Chevy engineering HAD to have real/full schematic diagrams) you can see how a particular function block is supposed to work, devise tests to verify it's integrity, and actually troubleshoot what you've got instead of blindly swapping known good components in/out....- Top

Steve----
The 1979 GM Corvette Service Manual published by Helm has an EXCELLENT wiring diagram supplement which contains fold-out, colored wiring diagrams. The actual 1979 service manual has a red cover; the supplement has a green cover and is very thin. If you buy the manual from Helm, you should get the wiring diagram supplement. If you buy it from any other vendor, inquire to be sure you get it. If you own a 79, you should have a GM Service Manual anyway, so you won't be wasting any money buying the manual to get the wiring diagrams. Like I usually tell people, if you intend to work on your own car, whatever car you have, you NEED the FACTORY service manual. Otherwise, let somone else who has the manual AND USES IT work on your car.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Amen, Joe!
Advice to get the GM service manuals to support your classic Corvette investment by Joe Lucia is RIGHT ON in my book!!!! Much I see posted on this and other Corvette information exchange sites is based on word of mouth and trial/error attempts to repair/maintain.
There's not a lot of need to guess. Most of the technicians with experience and training on these classic cars have retired long ago. But, the information they started with and used for consulting lives on.
Whether you turn your own wrench or hire the work done, being able to get the 'low down' and 'scope' a particular job up front is invaluable. You can query your mechanic (even if it's yourself) along the way and manage the project once you're in the know. Thanks, Joe!- Top

Re: Schematic's
I CONCUR (FOR WHATEVER VALUE THAT IS SINCE I AM A NOVICE RESTORER). AT THE VERY LEAST, THE ASSEMBLY MANUAL IS CRITICAL. UNFORTUNATELY, THE ONE THEY SELL IN THE CATALOGS (I.E. CC AND MA) HAVE BEEN REPRODUCED SO MUCH THAT THEY ARE DIFFICULT TO READ AND SOMETIMES TOTALLY ILLEGIBLE-ESPECIALLY THE WIRING DIAGRAMS AND THE DASH CLUSTER EXPLOSION DIAGRAM. THERE MAY BE A MARKET FOR CLEAR, COLORED WIRE DIAGRAMS FOR THE EARLY/MID YEARS AS YOU DESCRIBE FOR THE LATER MODELS. ANOTHER CRITICAL ITEM FOR THE RESTORER IS ACCESS/KNOWLEDGE TO THIS WEBSITE. THIS PAGE HAS SAVED ME COUNTLESS HOURS IN DIAGNOSIS, MONEY, AND AT THE SAME TIME HAS BEEN RATHER ENJOYABLE. SINCERELY, KAS- Top

Re: Schematic's
Thanks for the complimentary post. At first I wondered why you were 'shouting' at us (all capitalized text). Guess, you're fervent in your response. So, that fuels the folks who take the time to reply. Thanks for the encouragement and remember, joining NCRS as well as your local chapter CAN payback both in dollar/time savings as well as fun/friendship....- Top
