C3 1971 LT-1 Valve covers

Hi

Does anyone know if the early 71 LT-1's had the chrome twist in cap on the valve cover like the 1970 LT-1? Most books I have say that GM went to the rubber push in caps in 1971. The reason I ask is I have a early Sept. car and it has the chrome twist in cap. I realize that these may not be the original covers but there in pretty bad shape and I want to replace them with the correct covers.

I believe I have judged a couple of August built 1971 LT1s with twist in chrome oil fill caps. From memory I don't recall any that were real original, but I believe I have given the benefit of doubt to the owner. The real critical date is the assembly date of the engine.

That is the kind of call that is dependent on the judge. It could go either way. Making judgement calls is why the position is called judge.
You will have to restore it following what you believe is the original configuration. If the valve covers look old enough to be original to the car, then stick with that configuration.
