    question about '96 LT4.

Looking to buy a '96 LT-4. Are these reliable cars? I can't afford one unless it has alot of miles. Do the LT4's have good service after 80,000 or so? I have heard good and bad about the mobile 1 oil and seals. Any suggestions?
    thanks

    Rick,

The LT4 is like most other engines/cars, it depends on how it has been driven and maintained. If you can get reliable maintenance records that will give you a hint. See if you can find out how many owners and have a dealer run the VIN to see what records they have.

If maintained and not seriously abused, yes, they are reliable for a long time.

Chevrolet recommended Mobile 1 in some vehicles, like the ZR1, and it is ok there. I don't know what the recommended for the LT4.

It has been well taken care of, oil changes, etc. Chevrolet requires mobile 1 oil for this car. That is what it has been using. Some have said that the synthetic oil causes the seals to break down faster. Just wondering what others have encountered. You cannot use any other oil with this car according to a service person I talked to or it will not run long.

Was that service person possibly involved in selling?

With appropriate maintenance, that is, changing oil on the appropriate schedule and a high quality filter, non synthetic oil will perform quite adequately.

One reason for the factory fill and recommended continued use of Mobil One 5W30 is heat that the oil will experience during use. An LT4 depending on where the car is driven will run 205-210 as a normal coolant temp as per my experience. The Mobil One should have no adverse affects on seals with mileage since the seals used in the LT1 and LT4 were designed to be used with synthetic oil. Again this is based on my experience of about 27K on my LT4. Don't drive it below 60 in sixth gear, at 70 the engine is doing only about 1,400 RPMs in sixth.

I had a brand new yellow one .it was great . lots of power , good gas milage, fun to drive. there was a recall on the roller rockers . the clutch hyd, cylinder went out. down side tires wear out fast, weatherstrips last about a year, seats wear on the edges real fast.great car but the C5s are better. After almost 7 years my weatherstrip is like new and no problems with the hyd clutch. Original tires still have plenty of good tread after 27K highway miles, no dragstrip operations or steet racing. The recall on the LT4 roller rockers only applied to the early cars. Mine was purchased in June 96 and had no problems. My seats are the sport seats and are like new. The car stays in the garage a lot also. The 96 service manual recommends using silicone grease on prolonging the life of weatherstripping and gives GM part number.
