    Muncie Help Needed

I just purchased an M-21 for my 65 327/350 (build date 12/3/64) from Randy at Engines Limited. When I received the transmission, the tail housing casting number is 3857584. From everything that I can come up with, this tail housing was not offered until Feb. 65. I am saying the correct tail housing number should be 3846429, but I am being told that "experts" are telling Randy that I have the right tail housing for my build date. I guess my question is; How does a car with a December 1964 build date have a tail housing that was not available on muncies until Feb. of 1965? I will turn to the "True Experts" to help me clear up this one.....Your help is greatly appreciated.

Dave, Somewhere in its life this trans was rebuilt or ??? and the tailhousing changed. You are correct your trans has the wrong tailhousing for your cars build date. Not a big deal to change back to a #3846429 tail. Does it have the correct #707 side cover? If you need a #429 tail or #707 side cover I have a bunch of them....Crash

      Eric,
Thanks for the response. I figured I was right, but the gentleman I purchased the trans from will not not admit I am. I purchased the trans as a numbers matching replacement, so it looks as though I will need the 429 tail housing in order for it to be correct. All of the other numbers are correct for the trans. other than the tail housing. Please email me at: red6t5vette@hotmail.com
      I would be interested in a 429 housing....Thanks

Don't jump too fast, I don't know where the myth came from that the trans tailhousing change was Feb build, but I have a Dec '64 build car and a Jan '65 build car, both with original transmissions, and the "later" tailhousing. Look at your underbody. If there are clips running up te pass side of the trans tunnel for the speedo outlet on the pass side, then you need the later style housing. I don't have my assy manual handy, but I'd bet there is a date tied to the installation of those clips.

The clips were added in August, and the speedo cable part number changed in October, but those are A.I.M. illustration change dates, which usually don't relate very well to actual change implementation dates on the line; actual changes were normally well after the illustration changes.

            Hi Guys,
I agree with Bill. Don't have any idea where that idea of Feb.65 came from on the trans tail housing change over. My Nov 27 AO Smith body 65 has the #584 tail housing with the (which has the speedometer output on the passenger side) with the clips for the cable on the passenger side of the body trans tunnel.
            Hope this helps,

...584 tail on VIN 0148* (early Nov '64)

Agree with all who said your tail housing is correct. I've never seen a '65 4-speed with a "429". A 3-speed had a driver's side speedo cable attachment, but this wasn't a muncie.

Thanks for the information guys.....I looked up Muncie ID #'s and it says that the 584 tail did not come out till Feb 65. This is good news, as I now do not have to take apart a fresh rebuilt transmission....Thanks for making my day!!

"Found on the internet" Only as good a resource as the effort spent by the person who posted it to verify the information.

                      Re: Muncie Help Needed

The myth started in Alan Colvin's book " Chevrolet by the numbers " 1965-69 page 267, bottom right, "1966 through 1969 muncie 4-speed" The first noticeable external change was a new extension housing design with the speedometer gear drive moved from the driver's side to the passenger side. This changed in February of 1965....Seeing that Alan had access to Chevrolet production and shipping records ( Muncie also ) for his books, I would have to say its not a myth but a fact...Hope this helps...Crash

                        Re: Muncie Help Needed

I see way too many original cars out there with the late design that were shipped well before Feburay. We have had examples in this thread for Jan, Dec, and Nov. I believe what the cars are telling us, not what the "numbers book" says. As John Hinkley pointed out, the AIM changes are early enough to make it a model change transition.
