Definition of NOM and Matching Numbers

Could someone please clarify the definitions of the following:

    1) NOM - Not Original Motor

    2) Matching Numbers Car

If you have a replacemnt motor which is correct in terms of
Casting Number and Engine Code but the Engines Build Date is after
the manufacture of the car date and the VIN on the block does not match
the cars's VIN: (In other words the replacement engine came out of an
identical car that was built 6 months later but same model year)

    Is this a NOM?
Is this a Matching Numbers Car?

    Thanks

Re: Definition of NOM and Matching Numbers

In my opinion, any engine that is in the car other than the engine that came in it from the factory would make it a NOM car. If all the numbers match - restamped, etc, then it would be a numbers matching NOM. What you have outlined sounds like a NOM car to me.

      This is a #1 not a #2.

        What you actually have is:

        1) an perfect example of why NCRS steers clear of the term 'numbers matching'
        2) a typical example of the gobbledegook that shows up on eBay every day.

There is NO set definition of 'numbers matching'- it can mean anything you want.

            Re: "Correct"

You have the correct "type" block with the "correct" casting number. That is the first judged number. If it is found to be "correct", then we go on to the casting "date".(up to 6 months before the build date) Your casting date could possibly be OK. If it is found to be "correct" then we go to the stamp pad for the assembly date, vin number, engine suffix, and broach marks. Its also possible that the suffix and broach marks could be "correct". It may still be possible to gain a "Top Flight" with this engine even though there would be major deductions. At Bloomington it would be automatically in the Siver catagory.
