I need a specific casting number exhaust manifold.

I have been a long time member of the Corvette Forum web site. A member suggested I join this elite group. I am in the process of restoring a 71 small block coupe. I keep getting closer and closer to NCRS standards. I have made the decision to do just that. The only component on my car that isn't a matching number piece is the right hand (paasenger) exhaust manifold. I am looking for casting number 3989036. This is a 1971 350/270 HP car. Do any of you folks know where I might find one to purchase? I'd appreciate any help you can be.

The part number aspect of that part is not judged, so as long as it looks like the one you need, you'll be OK.

Hi - Try Crane's in California. I purchased both of my correct casting number exhaust manifolds from Dave at Crane's and they were in perfect condition. He has a web site http://cranescorvette.com/toc.htm

      Thanks

You could also try Neal Bridges in Clearwater, Florida.

I'm trying to understand your post. The casting number is not judged? Or the part number is not judged? Casting numbers have been judged for as long as I've been a part of the NCRS (since before the 63-67's were admitted!!!). the part number and casting number are some times unrelated--but he's looking for a specific casting number. Am I missing something?

            Mike--

I was going by this from the TIM&JG:

"On small blocks the date can be seen with a mirror on the portion of the manifold that sticks up above the head. The date is not usually visible with the manifild installed, and therefore, is not to be judged".

I must have confused the "casting date" with the "casting number".

PS I hope I didn't ruin your weekend with that post, you seemed somewhat upset.

Yeah, Mike, you're missing something.... The current Shark JG books describe both the casting number and casting date process. They go on to PROHIBIT judges from attempting to judge the casting DATE due to its relative inaccessibility.

Other divisions of Corvette with equally obscure casting date location leave the 'attempt' to judge as individual discretion of the judges involved (similar policy on judging water pump date codes -- varies with specific Covette division and the National Team Leader involved in writing and maintaining the JG book).

Sooo, the '70-72 JG book speaks specifically to exhaust mani date coding and says, "The date is not usually visible with the manifolds installed and, therefore, is not to be judged." I think the post you responded to confused casting date with casting number.... The cast number IS judged while the cast date is NOT judged in this era.

Clear as mud, eh? Sometimes the consistency of this/that similar item and its dissimilar treatment across Corvette judging divisions IS confusing. Why judge one part one way in one time frame and another way in another time frame when it's the same item/technology? But, that's the way the NCRS system is, today--some variance in treatment exists....

i would suggest looking on EBAY. there are about 300 or so pages of corvette parts on there on any given day. look under "parts and accessories" in ebay motors. thats where i usually go to get rid of the parts that i don't want anymore.

                  Jack--
As the 61-62 team leader for 20 years, I was aware of all that. You said it all very well, by the way. I am aware of the inconsistencies, because I inherited a judging manual with strengths and weaknesses and then oversaw the next two editions (with their strengths and weaknesses) and then took part in the most recent revision.
My point, however, was that the advice that was being given was essentially "just get a manifold that looks right because they don't judge the casting number", and that is incorrect advice for any/all model years. The casting DATE, of course, is another issue.

                    Rick-----

This particular casting is not that hard to find. It was used on many trucks as well as Corvettes. It is a "ram's horn" type casting with no brackets and no AIR fittings.
