i'm looking for a new turbo 400 transmission for my 74 vette. i'd prefer not to have mine rebuilt if thats possible. if i absolutely have to have mine rebuilt does anyone know a person or place i can trust to do it correctly the first time? money is no object. i just dont want to install this tranny twice due to a poor rebuild. i removed it yesterday so the tranny is already out of the car. geno from pittsburgh.

It's a common transmission, so I think your concern may be overblown... after all, there's no absolute guarantee that the "new" TH400 you acquire won't have to be pulled, either, is there? Most large transmission shops (ie, AAMCO, etc) should be able to handle the job without a problem (just insist that they rebuild yours rather than exchange it), and guarantee their work.... ask your friends and neighbors who they've used.- Top

Re: looking for a "new" 1974 TH 400 any suggestion
Yesterday I did a swap out on the turbo 350 trans on my 77 Buick Electra. I bought the transmission at Advance Auto for $410 plus $100 core. If you want to keep your original transmission, then all you lose is the core charge. Btw, this was the original transmission and the replacement included a rebuilt torque convertor, new vacuum modulator, and new brass fittings for the cooler lines. The company that Adv. Auto deals with also has scads of 400's. The only component from my old trans was the tail shaft and its speedo gear. Of course, I put in a new shaft seal.

Check out in your home town where the police garage takes their cars to have the automatics worked on. A good place where I live is a independent transmission shop that the dealerships send their cars. I once saw in their shop where they had bought a lot of new GM automatics that GM was not going to carry anymore.
Whats wrong with your turbo 400, my 70's has about 160k on it and no problems. Will still break loose shifting from first to second and just fluid and filter changes for 32 years.- Top

Re: looking for a "new" 1974 TH 400 any suggestion
thanks for the suggestions everyone. i just dropped it off at my local tranny shop today. i really wanted to buy a brand new one from the general but it seems as though that isn't going to happen. the seller had the tranny rebuilt in jersey right before i bought the car a few years ago, so you can see why i was reluctant to let the local idiots try to rebuild it again for me in pittsburgh. people just don't seem to do good work anymore. guess we'll see how long this one lasts. thanks for the help.
