    Re: Is my 61 a "feulie"

    Mike,
    I have what appear to be the original and correctly dated 461 heads(both are L70 which is Dec. 7, 1960) for my Dec 13, 1960 built CS FI engine. They have the correct low relief double hump but the humps are not really squared off, they are somewhat circular. They look like the picture in the JG. Are the later 461 heads have a large hump and that is why these are called squared off???? Second question refers to the balancer. Does it step "up" to the rear??? meaning the part of the balancer closer to the block is 6" in diameter and the part in contact with the pulley is smaller??? Any clarification is appreciated.

      Re: Is my 61 a "feulie"

      the 461x heads have their double humps squared off or,. . as the judging manual points out , they are flattened. Regardless of squared off or flattened, the pre-jan 62 461x head isn't like the later l94 & 202 small block heads for 62 and up which have a neatly semicircular hump. ass far as the harm balancer goes , don't think my verbal description did much more than confuse you guys. sorry. Next regional or nat.meet you go to,look at the 270 & 315 Hp 61's on diplay and be sure to have dennis clark check the harmonic balancer to ascetain if its a genuine Stepped off balbncer. I think old dipstick knows what to look for

          Mike,

          Thanks for the response. Actually, I discovered your description of the pulley after I created my post and understood it perfectly. By following your description I determined my balancer must be an original. I'm still a bit confused about the flattened tops on the double humps, so I will look at a 61 FI car at Hershey and learn for myself. Thanks for the help.

            Mike;
            Actually your description of the Harmonic Balancer was good. I want to make sure I got it right. I think what you are saying is that the solid lifter car balancer had a wider profile than normal, which is about 3/4". Mine you can't see very well, but if you reached down and felt between the balancer and the face of the water pump cover ,instead of there being a recess behind the balancer ,it actually steps out toward the water pump cover. Is that right?

              sounds like you have the correct balancer for the 270 & 315 hp 61 SBC. too bad I'm a poor 3-D illustrator, would have saved a lot of typing.

                  Dave:
                  Thanks agin for all your help. Just one more thing ,are you sure about by build date? I was informed earlier that my car was produced on march 27th, 1961, in St Louis.
