    Lane,

I suggest you purchase an NCRS POCKET SPEC. GUIDE. I have and use my 1953-1972 booklet frequently. These are available from NCRS' store for $10 plus shipping charge of $4 for orders under $30. There are 2 editions now available, 1953-1967 and 1968-1982 Pocket guides. Order by phone at 513-385-8526 or by FAX at 513-385-8554. These guides along with the service manual, Assembly Instruction Manual, and perhaps the judging guide for your model and year are extensive resources.

Also a search of the archives using keywords may also be enlightening.

If it was a L-84, it would have a tach with a 6500 redline (so does L-76), and the radiator support would have an oval shaped hole on the LH side (the L-84 engine air inlet), but since the service radiator supports all had this hole, it is not a good indicator, especially if other evidence exists that the car had front end damage at some point, which is not uncommon.

The other indicators would be 2.5" exhaust manifolds with the choke clean air tube on the LH side and holes in the LH inner fender for mounting the air clearer assembly.

        PS

The most sure fire indicator would be a "numbers matching" properly dated "RF" or "RX" (FI & TI) cylinder case.

Other tell tale signs...Idler pulley, Alternator pulley diameter, lack of PS and AC, Oil pan design, heads, exhaust manifolds, emblem holes plugged in fender, exhaust pipe diameter, tach red line, distributor part number and drive unit, many similarities between a 365 L76 and a 375 L84! be careful.

            Lane,

Another thing to check is the passenger's side exhaust manifold. FI cars had a passenger's side exhaust manifold WITHOUT a hole for the choke heat tube. Check for welding filler metal repair of the area where this hole would normally be. This hole can be filled, ground down and sand blasted to look original. Even if there is no evidence of a hole, you can take the passengers' side manifold off and look in from 2-1/2" outlet. This area should be visible. This area is not easily reached to fill and smooth. This can or can't be a good place to look, although if the car at an earlier time in it's life had headers installed, most guys just tossed the manifolds in the scrap pile. Correct manifold number for the left side is 3797942 and right side is 3797902. There may also be a casting date in the inner side if the manifold next to the head. It would be near the rear or left center exhaust port on the passenger's side manifold.

You might want to look at the distributor also. Check to see if the data plate date is within the build date of the engine. The distrubutor number should be a 1111064 for 375 HP engines with trasistor ignition, 1111063 for early 375 HP engines and 1111070 for later 375 HP engines. Alternator should be 42 amp number 1100669.

            Regards,

the toughest part to find for a 64 or 65 FI vet is the small plastic connector that plugs into the microswitch on the drivers side of the plenum. See AIM Sect L84 sheet 6.00 Item3 and 4. The plastic plug ins that Chicago Corvette sullpies is about 30% larger than that which GM used in 64 & ^5. Ps this wouldn"t apply to a very early 64 FI if it was equipped with a 375 rochester fi unit.
