    Question for 66 & 67 Judges

In a question posed below, I asked about the 66 judging manual as it relates to 327 radiator shrouds. Mr. Carl Rose and I have been discussing this after I questioned, on this BB, why my 66 Judging Manual calls for a painted shroud and his 67 Judging Manual calls for an unpainted, natural fiberglass. Are both manuals correct? I had always been under the assumption that, since the 67 is really a hold over model due to quality control problems with the intro of the 68, that it and the 66 were mechanical clones. Obviously, there are styling differences, parking brake differences, and some really minor changes. Is there really a difference between the two shrouds?

    Thanks, Gary

    Re: Question for 66 & 67 Judges

Gary, This has been a matter of informal discussion at several meets I've attended. Logic would suggest that whatever method was used in 66 it would carry over to 67. I know one top level judge with a 66 425 bowtie car who stated that when he lifted a sticker off a dirty 66 BB shroud there was no paint underneath. This might suggest that whatever paint was on the shroud perhaps got applied during the final assembly of the vehicle i.e. black out or some other touch-up? However, given the conflict between the 66 and 67 manuals I would be surprised if an experienced judge would deduct much if anything for this. In my case I painted my 66 shroud so there would be no issue during judging. I would like to state that the above is my opinion only. Perhaps one of the team leaders would like to comment?

Final 66 shroud update (I promise)

If any of you have followed my questions about 66 radiator shroud during the removal and, now, the reinstallation of my radiator and shroud, I can report all that has transpired. My shroud was loose where it had been riveted. It looked factory original. I took it all apart and after I thoroughly cleaned it up, I came to the conclusion that the holes were drilled by a previous owner (obviously not factory). It is now painted semi-gloss black and the three pieces, all with General Tire part numbers, have been bonded back together. BTW, there is absolutely no evidence that these pieces were ever previously bonded, which leads me to believe that this car has a replacement shroud, although a correct one.

From this great BB I have learned just about everything that I wrote in the previous paragraph, plus lots more on brakes, master cylinders, and bleedig techniques. Many thanks to all of you who supplied part numbers, background information, bonding compounds, and suffered the comparisons to your car. I guess that is what makes this BB so unique.

Hopefully, I will have the rest of the cooling system and the hood installed by this weekend. After the brakes are bled, maybe I can enjoy my first spring ride on Sunday afternoon.

        Thank you, Gary
