    Who's the Dipstick ? (BB)

This post prompted by a purported NOS '67 BB dipstick "won" on eBay auction yesterday for $ 502. It has a red button with dimple/crimp opposite; ADD 1 QT. and "USE SE ENGINE OIL..". Oh yeh, also has part # 3981088.

My question is what vintage / use is this item ? The part # doesn't check out in my '53 - '70 book. Although dimensions weren't quoted, it's probably one of the longer ones. Have a look at the close-up photos in the link below.

Then the price of that dipstick makes an original oil filter worth $700.00.

Can't tell you anything about the part no., but the API says that the class SE Oil is for 1979 and older cars. Predating that was the SD class which is for 1971 and older, and the SC class is for 1967 and older vehicles. So it sounds like the dipstick is in the 1971 to 1979 vintage.

Later 1970 Corvette big blocks (and all 1971-74 Corvette big blocks) used dipstick GM #3981088. This dipstick is used with dipstick tube GM #3981089.

I followed that auction too. Was AMAZED at the selling price of $502.00. Since it had the "cutout" or "notch" near the bottom of the handle, I thought this was an over the counter replacement. I thought originals had handles without the notches. Also, had the red button. The NCRS JG for 68-69 calls for a red button dipstick for 69 BB's. Does the one from GM Parts Direct have the red button? Is the JG wrong for the 69 BB's? I thought they all had the part number on them. ??? Chuck

I think we all need someone make sense of this Ebay bid. A $5.00 item sells for $500. What is so special about this item. It had 20 bidders going after it. I repeat, 20 bidders. Maybe one of the bidders could explain. I've been following these post, but some needs to explain. Please!

I think that even if it was an aftermarket dipstick, it might merit a 1 point deduction.
                        Let's see now:
                        1 point= $500.
                        perfect car = 4500 points
                        4500 x $500= $2,250,000.00 for perfect car.

I can't afford this hobby anymore

This ranks right up there with the dimwit that paid $3500 for a pair of '69 Camaro sill plates (that are still available from GM for $60.00). Amazing.

I removed the same dipstick and tube from one of my 67 drivers and replaced it with a correct one. If anyone wants it, all they need to pay me is postage.
