    1955 V8 History

Anyone know the number of V8 Corvettes produced in the 1955 model run of approximately 700 total? Also, I have been told that a small number of factory 3 speed manual transmission V8's were produced at the end of the 1955 model run...Anyone know if this is true and if so, how many?

    Gary----

Most 55 Corvettes were powered by the then-new 265 cid V-8 engine. The number of 6 cylinder powered cars was very few; I've heard estimates as low as 20 or 30 total. As far as 3 speed manual trans goes, supposedly these became available about mid-year and about 75 cars were so-equipped. C-1 cars are not an area of expertise for me so, hopefully, a C-1 specialist member can provide more complete/accurate information.

I was just inquirying about a '55 and it is thought to be an original 3 speed, but it about mid production. Does anyone know when the first 3 speeds were installed and anything about how to verify. I looked at the Corvette Black Book and it does not give much more help in determining the first 3 speed or how many 6 cylinders were produced. I thought I read somewhere that it was as few as 6 six-cylinder produced. I will look through my notes and see if I can find out more info.

Gary/Joe, I am not sure what happen, I posted a response which did not show up, I may have not posted correctly, so if this is a duplicate please disregard. I looked through my documentation last night and found that only 6 or 7 six cylinders were produced. Also the 3 speeds were not started until sometime around s/n 659, which means that if all of the remaining cars were 3 speeds, there could only be 41 cars with 3 speeds. The start number of 659 came from information recorded by Noland Adams in the Straight Axle Corvette Technical Guide. The number of six cylindes came from information obtained from Jim Frakes, when i was researching the Corvette Birthday Book. If there were 41 or fewer 3 speed '55 Corvettes then they would be rare. I can not recall seeing one..............
