Could someone please explain how to properly lube these cables? Getting some noise which I suspect to be these cables. I checked the archives but didn't get detailed procedure info (ie do you pull the cable out of the sleeve or can you just put the lube in the end(s)? 58 245hp generator drive. Thanks, Ken

Re: c-1 tach/speedo cable lubrication
I would remove and clean the cables, and also clean the case out if it is really gunked up. You can use one of those spray cleaning solvents like brake cleaner as the solvent is fast drying and leaves no residue. The 99-cent-a-can stuff works as well as the higher price stuff.
There is a special graphite based lube for speedo/tach cables. Also, you should only lube the bottom half or so of the cable per service manual directions. I presume this is to preclude lubricant from finding its way into the instrument being drive.
A lot of folks use plain old chassis grease for this application, and seem to have satisfactory results, but the aforementioned is how it is supposed to be done.
The bad news is that the cables come out from the dash end.- Top
