    C2 A-Frames

Novice Question. If I loosen the nuts on bolts which hold the shims at cross shaft on the upper A-Frame, what will happen? Can I just loosen the bolts and remove the shims? Will I have difficulty replacing the shims once removed? I would like to remove the shims and nuts for cleaning. Will this effect the alignment or anything else?

If you loosen them with weight on the car it will force the A arm in. You can then remove the shims. Just replace in the same order as removed.

Thanks Wayne, I'm glad I asked. I have the car on jack stands. I assume that if the weight of the car is on the wheels that would be OK.

If you have it off the ground, you will have to pry the shaft out to remove and install the shims.

Removing the jack stands is not a problem. Curious, why is the shim order important?

You have to put the same amount at each location to keep the alignment.

I think that Wayne means to put the shims back onto the same bolt you take them off. To maintain the front camber and toe settings from the alignment.

Ralph if you would place a floor jack under the lower control arm and support the weight of the car you would be able to remove the shims and nuts for cleaning. With the weight supported in this manner the upper control arm is quite movable. If you wanted you could separate the upper ball joint form the spindle and clean and paint the upper control arm as well, it will remove easily.

Jim, where do you suggest placing the jack under the control arm?

You could just center the floor jack under the shock to support the wieght.
