    C1 Rear Spring Banding

I was just informed by Corvette Central that they are no longer renting the tool to crimp the straps that clamp these springs.

Does anyone have a "Plan B" to suggest.

    Thanks

    John,

I faced the exact problem some time ago. Looking at the old clamps to get an idea how the crimp was to appear, I was able to wrap the spring assembly with the new rubber and strap and held it in place with a vise and 'C' clamps, installed the little clip, then applied (hammered) the crimp using a ground down chisel. It holds just fine and it's close enough for government work but a really sharp judge may be able to detect the difference. We'll see.

John: You could buy the tool ($160 new, perhaps much less if you happen to find one at a swap meet). Or you could find a fellow member near you that has made that investment and ask to borrow. They are out there. Might as well line-up a Mongoose for your strap rivets while you are at it...

The tool spec'd by CC in their band kit is about as accurate as the parts in the kit, i.e. pretty close to original but differing in minor detail. At least, as I compare it to my one car. Let me know if you want specifics... -Karl (WI)
