Can one tell 1.94 vs 2.02 '462' heads from outside

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between 3890462 heads with 1.94" and 2.02" intake valves by looking at the casting numbers or for that matter by looking at anything on the outside or on the valve spring side of the heads? If not, how did GM keep track of them in inventory? Some paint broadcast marking?

    Thanks,

    Gary

Both Flint and Tonawanda used paint markings on the end of the heads 20 years ago.

      Terry,

And these paint markings were eventually covered up by the chevy orange, I presume.

      Thanks,

      Gary

        Gary:

As far as I know, there is no way to tell. They both used the same "double hump" casting, but the 2.02" heads went through a machining process which enlarged the valve seats, and unshrouded the exhaust (but not the intake) valve.

            Joe -

The unshrouding machining was adjacent to the intake valve, not the exhaust valve (used a 1.34" dia. cutter head piloted in the valve guide).

              John:

I stand corrected--I knew it was one of those. Seriously, you jogged my memory, which isn't too good at times. I unshrouded the exhausts, among other things, when I tricked up my heads.
