I have been looking for a correct alternator for my 66 L72...the car has a March 16 66 build date. The 1100696 42 A alterntors are tough to find, and I have been on John Pirkle's wait list since last year, and Don Briggs doesn't have any either. I found a seller in Hemmings that I am closing with on Monday if a core he has turns out OK...high bucks at $350 restored, using the "patented" as everyone seems to call it chemical/tumble restoration with no paint, complete recoat of amber varnish etc etc....but he silver cad's the fans and the TIM&JG talks of black phosphate as I recall. I can correct that, but anyone have any experience with Ken? He claims to have been doing this for years on thousands of alternators, and says he will match his restoration with anyone's. Thx for any input...Craig

Re: Alternator for my 66 L72
I tried unsuccessfully to contact Ken many times when looking for a 696 for my 1st week April 66 L72. I found a core in Hemmings with an acceptable and had it restored by Pirkle with great results. Pirckle then found me another 696 with a perfect date, which he restored and I am very pleased with. As you know, 696's are far and few between. Just stay at it and you will find what you want. Keep you inquiries live with many sources is the best bet ie don't hang your hat on one source. Also - you may want to put a wanted ad in Driveline and or Hemmings.- Top

Re: Alternator for my 66 L72
Question what the 'restorer' does for diodes, case screws, rear bearing and smoothing capacitor on the 696 you're thinking of buying. Diodes had GM P/N and date code rubber stamped into them plus there are headmarks and ID marks on the case screws, rear bearing cup and smoothing capacitor ALL of which protrude from the rear of the case and ARE judged by savvy senior judges....- Top

Re: Alternator for my 66 L72
Thx Jack - I am aware of the diodes and cap, the bearing always seems to be an issue unless the original is left and regreased. Is the smoothing capacitor a differnet part number on a 696 from say a 693? I have several originals of those....most of these guys seem to get the front cover and whatever happens on the back half is from cores everywhere, except for the diode dating. I called Cranes corvettes today and he said the 696 market is really drying up in the last 6 months, he was prodding me for any contacts and said he can sell them for $600-700 any day of the week...uh oh...not a good sign....Craig- Top

Re: Alternator for my 66 L72
Also - I have seen some 696 examples on Ebay that to me are HIGHLY suspect, the last two digits 96 are stamped deeper than the rest...to me an IMMEDIATE flag. One seller said the Canada units are like that...sounds more like restamping to me!....Craig- Top
