I don't know if there is a method to the madness of when the "big tanks" ceased and the "small tanks" were produced. I know that Bob Jones is the "keeper" of the Z06 registry and that Franz Eistereicher and Eric Gill are Z06 gurus who may know an answer. I have a copy of the Z06 registry that Bob Jones maintains. Of course, the registry was setup after Bob surveyed folks and I believe the survey was accomplished back in mid-1980's?
FYI - the reason for my statements is that I know that some of the "big tanks" have VIN's close to the end of the 1963 production run. Will check the registry prinout when I get home.
Thanks Rick. My Z06 was a small tank car as well. Even though the option supposedly changed, I suppose the big tank could have been a separate additional option added to the order. Can't imagine why not....
Perhaps I should dig up my old records on my old '63 and add it to Bob Jones' registry.
thanks again
Verne
When I get home I will send you Bob Jone's contact info so you can provide him all the info on your car. Bob doesn't like email - thinks it is a waste of time! He prefers a telephone call or a letter.
The revised Z06 option was announced in Corvette News Vol. 6 No. 3, and I believe it was effective sometime in February, which would place the changeover somewhere in the range of 7976 to 9814.
The headline of the article is: "Corvette Special Performance Option Revised to Permit Greater Flexibility - Z06 option now available on both '63 models."
Acoording to historical information I have read, Z06s were built in what amounted to "batches" - four as I recall - and most of them were built after the option was revised by unbundling the big tank and knock-off wheels.
I believe you are correct - I just don't have everything in front of me here at work. Will check the Z06 registry, etc. when I get home and post if there is anything different than what you remember.
regarding late big tank Z06's: I currently have vin 30837Sl20301 (see noland's book p 180) which was probably the last big tank Z06 built. I have all the paperwork on this 28K mile orig. unrestored car that i first saw in l970. I have spoken with the orig owner(he's still alive ) and in regards K/O wheels: he ordered them and paid for them when the order was placed. THE car came in with steel wheels and he was refunded his $ for K/O option. about sept or oct of 63 , he bought 5 K/O's over the counter from the chevy dealer and installed them on the car. The 5 K/O's were 3 bar spinners and are currently owned by Mike Yeager at Mid-Am corvette. I'm convinced no 63's left St. Louis with P-48.
Rick,
Just as an fyi, I checked my old records on mine. It was a little earlier than yours, VIN 109104, Sebring Silver on black. I've tried to track down the current owner to no avail.
