    1970 Tie Rod End Removal

Hi - I am attempting to remove my tie rod ends and have followed the guidance provided in the 1970 Chassis Service Manual, Chilton's, and 1970 Corvette Shop Manual but i cannot get the tie rod ends to come out of the steering arms. I have tried the hammering and pulling after soaking the joints in WD-40 and penetrating oil without success. It appears that they have probably not been previously removed but, with some of the things I have found done to this poor car, someone could have welded them in place.

I hate to try heating the steering arm because, with my luck lately, the car would probably go up in flames.

    Thanks

    Lee-----

I really doubt that they were actually welded in. If they were, the welds would be readily visible. I certainly understand how these can SEEM like they are weld-in, though.

To remove these joints without damage to the relay rod, tie-rod end, or tie-rod end boot, you really need a special press-type removal tool. This tool has jaws which clamp around the relay rod and a screw-type mandrel which presses on the stud. The tool is available from many sources, including A&I Supply (1-800-260-2647) and, I think, J.C. Whitney. It's about $60.

In cases in which extreme corrosion has taken place, it may not be possible to remove the tie-rod ends without damage to or sacrifice of some components. If the above-referenced tool does not work, you may be in this area.

        Ronnie----

Yes, that's a good idea, too------IF they have the correct tool that I described and not just a "pickle fork". The reason that I didn't suggest the rental approach is that I usually don't think in those terms. It's a strange "foible" of mine-----I usually purchase the tools I need even if I am unlikely to ever need them again. Definitely NOT a cost-effective approach.

I totally agree with Joe....the brand I bought was RIMAC (RINCK- McILWAYNE Inc) in NY. It is a totally choice grade tool, but not cheap. However, it works well, with no damage. You can also get some quality units from K-D and OTC....Craig

              Lee,

Assuming that you don't "care" about the condition of the tie rod ends and/or boots after removal, when I use a pickle fork I usually use the largest BFH or the MOAH that I can hold easily with two hands. I just did this operation on my 1970 Cutlass, and it was much easier with the car on my lift so that I could get clearance and "wind up" a little bit. I suppose that you could also use an impact hammer on the end of your pickle fork if you wished.

I have yet to ever use one of the tools Joe describes, although I have seen them. Maybe someday when I have less aggressions to take out on my cars.

Patrick...once you try it you will like it...however you don't have the satisfaction of the BFH/MOAH use!....Craig
