Upper radiator hose cut by the alternator bracket

I have a 71 small block coupe. I have seen some great engine pics lately. Some engines contain a two inch wide protective band that is wrapped around the upper radiator hose and secured by two long pull ties. It prevents the alternator bracket from cutting into the radiator hose. Is this an original piece of hardware or just a smart fix?
    Thanks.

    Bubba fix.

Correctly molded and installed hoses won't rub.

Probably a "temporary" fix which forgot it was "temporary". Most likely due to the wrong hose, the wrong belt , the wrong alternator bracket , an incorrect installation of components or a combination of the aforementioned.

I agree with the others. I bought a '71 with wrong hose that was getting cut. Put the right hose on and everything had proper clearances. -k
