    C2 tire size

Have a 65 and I know the original size was 7.75 x 15. My question is what is the conversion to a more modern radial size? I've been getting conflicting sizes from different tire stores. Some of the sizes that I been getting include 215/70/15, 225/70/15 and 205/75//15. Whats the correct one? Thanks in advance.

    Re: C2 tire size

Based on revs per mile of the OEM tire, which are 775, the closest modern radial tire match is 215/70R-15, which is also speced at 775, however, the OEM 5.5" steel wheels are the minimum width specified by manufacturers for this size. Six inch KOs or '67 6" Rally wheels would be a better choice for a 215/70, and your OEM hubcaps will fit the 6" Rallies.

Fender clearance will be tight especially with the wheels at full lock when the suspension goes into jounce, so caution entering steep driveways is advised.

The best 215/70R-15 that I am aware of is the W-rated Pirelli P4000 Super Touring. They are available from The Tire Rack for about $75 each, an excellent value.

      PS

Revs per mile for the 225/70R-15 are 760, which is the same as 6.70-15. The 205/75R-15 splits the difference between the 215/70 and 225/70 at 766, but there are no performance oriented tires available in this size.

        Duke,

Quick question on the 15x6 wheels and tire combo you mention - would these fit on a 1963 SWC without any problems? Reason I ask, I am thinking about buying some 15x6 steel replacement wheels from MidAmerica and then mounting some radial tires for cruising. I would store my original 15x5.5 steel wheels and 6.70x15 tires in the garage.

Should be okay. Drum brake Sting Rays actually have a bit more outside clearance because they have about 0.6" less track. You might even be able to install some V-rated 225/70R-15 police pursuit tires. The six inch wheels are a bit narrow, but they are still withing the recommended six to eight inch range.

If you can delay your purchase until the next issue of The Corvette Restorer so you can read my tire article you should have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

            Duke,

Can't wait to see your article! Unfortunately, I want to get the wheels and tires on the 1963 SWC so I can drive her on the caravan to Bowling Green! Don't feel like driving on the old bias tires from Baltimore to BG! (VBG)
