    1963 "Elephant Ears"

    Folks,

Anyone know of a vendor who is perhaps reproducing or has for sale the "big brake" "elephant ears"? I heard there was possibly someone in the Detroit area that was/had reproduced them!?

    Re: 1963 "Elephant Ears"

i've seen both C-1 and C-2 repo scoops while judging and none i've judged have the correct color of the ruberized material that originals i have in my possesion or any originals on the judged cars belonging to other members. some even have inappropriate metal frames and fasteners that attach the ruberized scoop to the metal frames. i know of no one reproing scoops that will pass as originals. bottom line---- if the rubberized portion is "snow white" in color, and you want full credit on the judging field, pass on them.if you want more specific description of original c-2 elephant ears, get back to me. good luck. mike mccagh

I too would like to have a set of elephant ears for my 56. They DO NOT need to be "correct" for judging, they just need to be correct for form, fit and function. I need them for scooping air, not for points. Anyone know where I can get a set that will bolt up and work properly?

          Re: 1963 "Elephant Ears"

I purchased a set of elephant ears for my 61 from one Jan Quast. He is or was a Bloomington (I hope it's OK to say that word here) Gold 61-62 judge who once owned my 61 Big Brake car at one time. They are a thing of beauty. I'm a few years from the finished piecing of this car together, so I don't know how they will pass in judging when sitting in the trunk.
I haven't talked to Jan in 2 years, so I don't know if the info is accurate. He also reproduces other corvette parts under his company name of ESL.

              Mike,
If these have the incorrect whiteness, can you please email a picture or describe as best you can the "correct" look?
              Thanks,
              Ron

originals were charcoal or dirt gray in appearance and had a seim gloss surface texture, unlike the shiney white ones i got from jan about 5 years ago. perhaps he has comeup with a better substitute. let me know if you get a set of his current repos.good luck mike

I do not know of the early scoops but my original are black on the rubber side and canvas (gray) on the inside. On the outside rubberized side each has a part number in yellow ink.

There was a fellow from Canada (Dan Chemeluski) in the 1980's repo these but they were were not the correct material. They were glossy and smooth in texture. The insides look like the inside of a tire. I will be on a trip for the next week or so but if you are interested in digital photo's I will try to get them when I return.

                      Re: 1963 "Elephant Ears"

The original scoops that came with my 28K mile ZO6 tanker have NEVER been installed on the car, they have either rested inside the car in a garage or on a shelf inside a garage. I know all two original owners. The scoops are dark gray and the part #s are still easily readable in yellow. I can't imagine them ever having been exposed to ultraviolet lite (which is usually what causes color changes although i suppose oxidation could cause them to turn gray from black). If anyone would like to see them stop by or I can bring the to Hershey &/or Corvettes at Carlisle. let me know. mike

62 elephant ears, and perhaps 61 were a beige color. Darker than Jan Quast's white ones (although Jan has the correct ply rubber), but absolutely not black or charcoal. I realize the posted thread is primarily interested in '63, but the original 62's I have (and I now the car they came on) are definitely beige.

                              Mike,
Were there any part numbers on the 61 scoops as described by the C2 guys?
                              Thanks,
