I've narrowed the "ground zero" transition date for the 1978 polyspare tire rim from yellow to black and was curious if our resident historians and trustees of Corvette minutia have recollections of why Chevy equipped Corvettes with a yellow rim or why they felt compelled to change it to black!

Re: 1978 Polyspare Rim Color
I expect that the gruesome yellow color had something to do with wanting the customer to get the regular tire repaired immediately and stop driving on the mileage- and speed-limited mini-spare.
I remember many years ago that most rental cars had awful fluorescent-color-painted rims on their spare tires to try and dissuade people from stealing the spares (so the cops could spot them on obviously non-rental cars)- Top

Re: 1978 Polyspare Rim Color
Tom, I too have always heard that the color was to encourage temporary use of the spare. This was the first use of a space saver spare for Corvette. My Jan 11 car has the pretty yellow beast.
So, will you next tackle the '78 mystery dates for changing the rear window trim?

Re: 1978 Polyspare Rim Color
You're right! I've collected a few data points from other 78s, but it seems there was some back and forth usage of the stainless and partially painted trim.
The judging guide I have says I should have the black stripe, but I think the all stainless is original.
