Appreciate any brief tips for installing motor in 84 with auto which has everything up front removed--got as much room to navigate as you can have. Specifically, what components on the motor should be left off or on to ease installation. Never having done this before, I picture having the trans raised as high as possible so alignment pins on block will mate up and then saddling block to frame. Should the motor mounts be on block or should I leave them in there saddles. That bottom motor mount bolt wouldn't seem to be very easy to get started as it is really crowded with frame/exhauast headers/etc. Any brief suggestion helpful.

Re: C4 84 Installing Motor
I guess there is not that much expertise by the viewers of this discussion board to give helpful information on installing your enging in your 84.
What is removed from the car reference what you mentioned about everything up front is removed?
Post what you learn from your experience. I may someday put a higher horsepower 350 in my 85.- Top

Re: C4 84 Installing Motor
i removed an LT5 engine and its ZF6 tranny from a wrecked 92 ZR1 several years ago and reinstalled the drivetrain in a 87 Frame/floor pan(which then got 61 vet front clip, doors rear clip etc). As i recall, i was able to pull the engine / tranny in one piece but i used a leveling engine hoist setup as the engine / tranny had to be on a significant angle (Nose up in air, tranny tailstock nearly touching the floor). I believe i read up on the removal in a
c4 shop manual. You probably would benefit from the shop manual if this is the first engine you've pulled.good luck mike- Top

Re: C4 84 Installing Motor
I suspect that MANY will have to deal with this issue in the near future as "restoration and preservation" of the early C4's really takes hold. It really isn't that big a deal at this point as I was just looking for some tips without having to reinvent any old wheels. I essentially have everything removed to include the engine--essentially two frame rails and lots of room. I feel the block can go back in with little trouble and I will have lots of room to add everything else. I can tell all that there is very little working space for the bellhousing/auto trans mounting bolts--real pain.
I will be putting everything back in this weekend. From the wipers forward she looks beatiful and not a speck of rust/grease/dirt. Pretty neat! To me the C$ is fun to work on and I have a 58 and 72 convertible frameoffs. The C4 is more fun!- Top

Re: C4 84 Installing Motor
I guess I can add my "expertise" to this one. I did a motor change on a 84 about ten years ago. The owner overheated the original engine and the block and heads cracked. I think she said the temp gauge read 299 when it started to act funny. I then told her that's as high as the gauge went.
Anyway, C4's are not really much different other than lack of room. You can keep most of the parts on the motor, especially the motor mounts. Just remove the horizontal bolts that mate the mount to the frame. The hardest thing is getting the bellhousing bolts out. The one car I did was actually missing the passenger side upper bolt. I have a feeling that his one is impossible to replace, so it was left out. Remove anything that might hit the firewall when you are tilting the engine. I'm pretty sure I left the distributor in. Use an engine tilter, it makes life much easier.
email me off the board if you have a specific question and I'll see if I can remmeber what I did. BBrkic@msn.com
