I've got a loud squeak that appears to come from the left rear wheel as it rotates. When brakes are applied, it dissappears. I'm getting ready to remove the bearing assembly and have the bearings replaced but wondered if this could be caused by anything else? Hate to go to all that trouble and miss the problem.

Re: C-2 rear wheel bearing
I wouldn't condemn the bearings until you have thoroughly inspected the brake on that corner. Spalled wheel bearings usually do not make a noise that would be described as a "squeak". They usually make a growling noise that is the same whether the brakes are applied or not.
If bearings spall the clearance will increase. You can get an idea of clearance by grabbing the top and bottom of the tire while it's off the ground with the parking brake off and wiggling it back and forth. There should be a slight amount of play you can feel, and if all four are fairly consisent, the bearings are probably okay.
Check the brake rotor for runnout and for any rubbing against the caliper. Also check the pins and pads carefully for any burnished areas that might be indication of vibration contact. Brake squeak noise is just high frequency vibration of parts in contact. Finally, you can dress the friction material with some same paper and slightly bevel the sharp edge around the circumference.

Re: C-2 rear wheel bearing
When the bearing on my 65 went out, it had a squeak when I went around a right hand corner. Going straight nothing. Had to have someone walk beside the car as I went around the corner(s) to determine which side it was. It had been only from 65 till 98 for it to fail. So look into it as it could be brake or bearing depending on how the squeak goes.- Top
