steering gearbox

my gearbox needs to be rebuilt,but I an thinking of just exchanging it for a rebuilt one. so is their any dates or numbers that I should be concerned about?
the car is a 73 big block, the car had headers on it that were aganist the gear box and their is wear marks on it from them. I think it just got fried
from the heat.

Just another of the MANY reasons NOT to use headers on a street-driven Corvette. As I've mentioned on numerous previous occasions, I wouldn't use headers on a street-driven Corvette. Absolutely. PERIOD. Never. Ever.

As far as your gear-box goes, you can exchange it for another. In your case, it's probably the best thing to do. However, you may not get full credit for the core if it's damaged in any way, so be prepared for that.

There are no "numbers" which you need to be concerned about. However, you will need to be sure that you get the 70-74 style steeing box. This box will have a worm (input) shaft with a flat on the splined end. Also, the box should have an aluminum cover as was used on 69-74 steering boxes (VERY early 69 may have used cast iron).

As I said it had headers I took them off as soon as I found a set of manifolds
that were in good shape. but since they most likely have been on the car for most of its life the gear box was bad when I got the car
I will call my favorite corvette parts supplier.
