I have stripped my teak wheel and need to restore it. What type of sealer and base coat should be used?

Re: Plastic wood grain wheel restoration
As far as I know, nothing exists that will give you a uniform finish and appearance. With all the things available for Corvette restoration, you would think someone would have some up with a repair/restoration kit. Since none are available and based upon my experience trying several diffent types of fillers, none of which filled the cracks to my satisfaction, it appears there is some type of art to the restoration of these wheels.
I finally gave up and had Teak Freaks do my wheel (they do teak as well as plastic wheels). I believe they use plastic sections from "donor" steering wheels to repair cracked sections although I don't know how they manage to blend the sections together for a uniform appearance. I guess that is a trick of the trade and why they get the money that they do for a restoration. They did a great job on my wheel and their service was excellent.
Figure between $250 to $300 dollars to restore your wheel. It might be a bit more if you do a swap as they keep restored wheels in stock.
Rather than doing a swap, I looked around at the swap meets for a spare wheel to use while mine was off the car. I picked one up at a good price and used it while mine was off the car. I subsequently sold the swap meet wheel on ebay for a nice little profit. This helped offset the cost of the restoration.- Top
