I have a 71 LS5 that needs the brakes bled ..... I am not sure if the fluid is that used with SS brakes or standard brake fluid ... is there a way to tell since the two can not be mixed ...... thanks in advance
Yes, take an ounce, or so, of the fluid out of the master cylinder and place it in a small clear glass vial or bottle. Then, add an ounce, or so, of known glycol brake fluid (DOT3 or 4) to it. Shake it up and let it sit for an hour, or so. If the fluid after sitting shows no evidence of phase seperation (i.e. there is no distinct "line" between "layers" of the fluid) then the original fluid should be glycol.
Joe's test will work just fine or you could use water. Water is miscible with glycol based brake fluid, but neither glycol based fluid or water is miscible with silicone brake fluid.
Any silicone fluid present in a mixture of glycol fluid or water will settle to the bottom as it's specific gravity is about 1.4, which is much greater than either water or glycol.
