    John,

You may want to check with Bob Cook. If you may recall, he did an article in Restorer a couple of years ago (?) which included pictures.

John, The only marking on 71 mufflers is a small "W". It is in relief in the braod middle of the muffler. Other original things to look for; Only one bracket for the hanger on the rear of each muffler. The other tell-tail sign of originality is the "key shaped" raised area on the top of the muffler exhaust exit pipe. This 'raised key' slides into the chrome exhaust tip connection to hold them at the perfect angle. The tail pipe is part of the muffler assembly. There was a paper part number tag on the front of the mufflers. Sorry don't have any more pic's. Look in the Restorer a couple of years ago for pictures.

The photos and story are in Volume 27, Number 1, Summer 2000 issue of The Corvette Restorer, page 38.

          John-----

Also, keep in mind that while C2 and C3 mufflers are, essentially, otherwise the same, the muffler hanger brackets on the rear of the muffler are different. Some later GM SERVICE mufflers had dual brackets so that one part number for each side would SERVICE both C2 and C3 applications.
