    65' Radio Opinion/Swap

    Hi,

I"m researching the replacement of the stock am/fm stereo and single speaker in my 1965 coupe to an am/fm cassette and CD player and 4 speakers. Interior modifications unacceptable. Don't really want to replace the center speaker with a single "dual" speaker either. (Yes, I'm picky! Have to have great tunes!)

Some parts' catalogues offer a (63-67 model year) 100 watt am/fm cassette with the capability to control a "remote" CD player. This would be quite adequate I think.

For speakers, the catalogues offer a seeming simular "bass" sound bar which transverses the rear area from side to side. An ad also featured replacement kick panels containing what appears to be standard 6x9 football shaped speakers.

It would seem the CD players offered may fit in the small well behind the passenger seat. JVC appears to manufacture the smallest of the two models I've found as well as holding more disks.

Anyone done such a swap or would like to comment? There doesn't seem to be very much in the way of am/fm/cassette radios or CD players to choose from.

    Thanks!
    Bill

You can leave everything as is in your 65 and enjoy great tunes and listen to a CD by buying a Bose Wave Radio, this is the big unit, not the Bose Radio. It will simply plug into your cigarette lighter, placed behind the seats, just go down the highway with the remote control in hand and enjoy. When you get home, remove it and crank it up while cleaning or working on your 65. Take it into the motel room on trips, it travels well.

        Richard,

Thanks - I will check out the Kenwood web site to see what is offered for 63-65's.There were some Kenwoods in the catalogues but not for my year. Your suggestion about using a dual voice woofer(s) is great as I am not all that impressed visually with the "bass" sound bar. It would probably do but....

I had thought, like yourself, the kick panel speakers were the best way to go for the front.

Hopefully all this will fit in the wells behind the seats - but I could always move/store the jack and handle and knock off hammer in the spare tire area - kinda like the jack in a 84 is kept. Thanks again Richard!

What I did for my '78, was to build a box to house the amps, woofer and main rear speakers that fit between the wheel wells and left enough room to still have storage. I think made it about 8-10 inches deep. I then covered it with matching cloth for the seats and made a frame with grill cloth for the entire front. For the '78 I replaced the in-dash speakers with hight quality tweeters. It worked out pretty well.

I just use an MP3 player it sounds the best and of course you hear what you want to hear. Doesn't help the passenger though.

Bill, the February 1993 edition of Vette Magazine has an article the I think you may want to see. It shows the step by step installation of of a very high performance sound system in a mid year Corvette....without any modification to the original appearance of the car. (Pages 62 to 64) It even has the name and phone number of the author. Good luck.

Can you give those interested in this article any idea of how to find it?
Vette magazine does not list any archives. Thanks
