    '67 Rear Main Seal

My Chilton's manual describes changing the rear main seal on my '67 SB by removing the oil pan and working from underneath. Does anyone have any advice of things to be aware of in doing this?

With the engine in the car, this is the only way that you can replace the rear seal. Just follow the procedure in the manual and you should be alright; it's pretty straight-forward. After installing the new seal, be absolutely certain to follow the procedure shown for applying sealer to the areas of the block/cap shown in the manual. If Chilton's doesn't show this, you need a GM manual. Some of the seals are supplied with a sheet of instructions which show this and, if you have that, then you have what you need.

A couple of things to keep in mind.
Is it the original seal or has it been replaced while you had the car. Sometimes the seals because of there age become hard and brittle and may be a little stubborn to remove.
If you go into a good auto parts store there is a tool which is used to tap the old seal out if it is required. This tool is shaped like the seal and is made out of a soft material. Never use a punch or a screwdriver as you will most likely put a mark on the crank. Then follow the instructions from the last post.

FWIW, as mine was only 6 years old, when I replaced it a year ago I just grabbed it with a needlenose and pulled it out.

When you push the new one in, and use the cheap plastic tool supplied, do NOT be tempted to push it "backwards" to center it if you push it in too far. You will likely rip or tear the seal on the sharp edges of the last main cap. Don't ask how I know this.
