    "083" and "091" Ignition Coils

Does anyone know the application of the "083" "12V" ignition coil? Is it OK to use it with a '57 dual quad?

Also, what is the correct location of the "091" and "12V" embossed characters on the coil canister for a '57 vette? Toward the top or the bottom? Thanks.

      Hi Vass -
I'm looking at an original 091 coil. The numerials are toward the bottom.
The top of the numbers are 1 3/8" from the bottom of the coil, and the numbers themselves are slightly more than 1/4" high. "12V" is directly below the "091". The bottom of the "12V" is about 3/4" from the bottom of the coil.

There were different locations of the "091" logo on the coils through the years, the '63 Judging Guide does a pretty good job of tracking the proper location for various years.

          Hi Bill-
I don't have the '63 Guide. Can you tell what year(s) the coil I described applies to? Thanks!

The lower location of the emboss is correct for '61-63 (at least)There are differences with regards to the presence or not of "nubs" at the base of the tower where the lead to the distribitor cap connects. No nubs '61-62, nubs '63, although this is not a clean break and late'62-early '63 very likely would be seen with either configuration.

                This was...

examined in two good Restorer Magazine articles by Kenneth Kayser with the first running in the Winter 1995 edition. Ken used GM drawings to document the changes made to Delco Remy ignition coil packaging technology over time and nailed down the side emboss location ('high' vs. 'low') change as coming on stream in the late 1961 era.

However, he received a number of letter and ran a subsequent article (1953-74 Delco-Remy Ignition Coil Update) about two Driveline volumes later. There, he reported a number of club members with unquestionably authentic '091 coils reported side emboss position differences. There were 'early' cars with low vs. high emboss as well as 'later' cars with high vs. low emboss.

Ken made two conclusions in his follow-up article: (1) the '091 coil was a rather low volume, high performance, component and there could have been a healthy on-hand inventory supply at the time the drawing change for the emboss was made to muddy the waters, and (2) while unclear from the drawings, it appeared there were 'alternate' emboss position used by Delco-Remy before the drawing change (multiple stamping machine, multiple assy lines/plants????) and there was no clear remaining documentation as to whether or not 'early' coils were allowed to vary naturally in 'high' vs. 'low' case emboss position.

Bottom line, the issue of emboss position vs. time is clear as mud!

                  Cal,
My original coil on my 60 has the 091 so low that the coil bracket covers it up! I have had to offer to pull it out for jdjing every time. I guess the fact that I was willing to pull it was sufficient for the judges!

                  Regards, John McGraw

                    Jack and John -
FWIW, the 091 (low position) I have came off my sold-a-long-time-ago FI 58.

Thanks for all the good discussion and info about the location of the embossed "091" and "12V" in the canister. I am still not sure where the "091" should be for a '57 vette. I am also waiting for the response from a '57 vette judge who claims that will get the right answer...I will post his response...
