    C1 Starter relay rebuild?

Does anyone rebuild the original starter relay for my 1960 with auto trans. I bought a replacement from MaryJo last year and now that I have finished my restoration I can't start the car using the key. I can start it by jumping the starter. The neutral safety switch is working fine. Everything checks out except the relay has power going in but no power coming out of it going to the starter solinoid. I think the new relay is bad and would rather have the old one rebuilt if possible.

There are rebuild kits available from older parts houses, or I have taken generic (non delco) solenoids apart and used the "wear parts" from them to replace the old ones in my Delco units. Don't be afraind to take it apart and look inside, Sometinmes all that is required is rotating one of the terminals to provide contact on a fresh surface.

What relay are you talking about? I thought the ign switch start contacts put 12V directly to the small screw on the silly noid (low current). Is there another relay to pick between the ign switch and the silly noid? If you jumper from the top LARGE screw with battery cable attached to the small screw does it start? If so I think you have an open somewhere in your ign start wires to the small screw IE: the neutral switch. Does it click? If so you have a silly noid problem IE: the contacts in the silly noid bolt contacts can be rotated or and the washer contact can be flipped over. I probably overlooked that relay if it is there.

There is a starter relay located on the right side (pass. side) firewall on my 60 with cast iron powerglide tranny. It is not shown in any of the year appropriate wire schematics in the AIM however it can be found in Nolands book. I did see a wire schematic in the service manual listed under 53-57 that does show a relay. I am going to bench test my old relay and see if it still works.

          Don,
Drop me an Email, and I will send you a scanned sketch of the internal and external schematic of both the original 3 terminal realy and the replacement 4 terminal relay.

I dug out the old relay that came mounted to the car when I bought it as a basket case. It was rusty and foul looking. It's stamped "904". I removed the top to bench test it and found that it buzzed when energized. I cleaned the contact points and it now works good as new. After a little paint it looks good too! Now for the hard part. How do I gain access to remove the bad (new) relay? It seems the stainless steel plug wire shield is directly in front of the relay and doesn't allow enough room to R/R the part. I am afraid I won't be able to reinstall the stainless shield if I remove it!

              Don,
You will have to pull the shield, but it is not as hard to replace after you have done it about 20-30 times!!!! All kidding aside, the shielding is not that hard to replace if you have the car up on a lift where you can reach straight up from the bottom and replace the screw that holds it to the horizontal shield. I used to cuss mine every time I took it off, but now I have a lift and can do it with my eyes closed! Take your car to somewhere you can get it up in the air and it will take most of the aggravation out of the job.
