C2 Wiper Motor Will Not Turn Off

The wiper motor on my 63 Convertible enjoys being turned on so much that it will not turn off. It runs at LO speed in both the OFF and ON positions and at HI on HI. The service manual suggests that it may be the relay. But before I remove the motor (big pain) does anyone have other suggestions as to the cause and how to check. For example, could it be the switch itself? That would be fairly easy to check if I knew how to check it. Also, if it does turn out to be the relay, are these aavailable? Source? Thanx for any help.

Typically this is caused by a broken piece (or dirty contacts) in the control contact assembly inside the wiper motor. This contact assembly isn't available new from any of the usual restoration supply sources. In the past I've repaired them with the wiper motor in the car, but I doubt I could talk a first-timer through this.

If you're determined to fix this yourself, look in the shop manual. It contains good wiring diagrams and trouble shooting procedures.

This is a common Corvette malady. Check that all the electrical connections are clean and functioning properly, but you will probably have to remove the wiper motor/transmission assembly.

When I finally pulled mine off I found the only problem was dirt and dried out grease that caused the cam and pawl system that seats the wipers to malfunction. All the was required was disassembly, a good cleaning, regreasing, and assembly for it to work perfectly. It was also fascinating to observe the clever design of this system.

One warning. The transmission is a little complicated - gears, cams, and springs, so I admonish all to not attempt disassembly of the wiper transmission unless you have the appropriate shop manual. My '63 Corvette Shop manual has a very comprehensive write-up on the wiper system, so if you have the proper service or overhaul manual, have decent mechanical aptitude and are patient, it's not a hard DIY job.

          Duke:
I appreciate the comments. I will be pulling the motor sometime this week for a thorough cleaning. Thanx.
