    C1 Tach Removal

I need to remove the tach to have it recalibrated. Is it possible to remove the tachometer from the cluster without disassembling the entire unit.

No, you will need to remove the cluster. The speedometer needs to come out before you can get the tach out. It really isn't as difficult as it seems. The ST12 has good directions and a good picture of how to reinstall the wiring harness. Disconnect the battery prior to starting this project. Having done it a few times, I can have a C1 cluster out in about 15 minuets and about the same to reinstall. Figure on twice that long the first time.

if your c-1 is a 53 to 57 vet , it takes about 3 minutes. if its a 58 to 62 then previous post is appropriate.

        Mike,
Does the 3 minute tach removal on a '56-'57 apply to a radio equipped car? It appears that the underlip on the backside of the dash will not allow removal of the tach unless it can be lifted up and out. The radio case appears to prevent any upward travel.
I have not attempted this yet, but wanted to be prepared in advance.
Thank you for your time and assistance.

I suggest you alot a bit more time than what Ed can do it in. It is not technically difficult. I did it years ago, but it takes me 15 minutes to figure out how I am going to contort my 260lb body into a position to get under the steering wheel and look up under the dash. Then I have to extract myself and return to repeat the process, because I brought the wrong size wrench or dropped it and cannot contort my arms in a position to pick it up eventhough it is by my side.

You will need a 3/8" nutdriver, and also a flex shaft nutdriver with a 3/8" socket can come in mighty helpful. A phillips head screwdriver will take care of the under-column chores. I use a large straight slot screwdriver to remove the dash bezels. Offhand, I can't think of any other tools necessary, other than a good light. Those newfangled flourescent lights that don't get real hot are very nice in tight quarters. A large frame person might benefit from removing the steering wheel. This will add perhaps 5 minuets to the task. This is one of those lovely little tasks that takes a lot longer to decide to do it than it actually takes to do the job.
