1975 Emission Control Equip new information

Sorry Guys, I goofed up my first request for help. I do have some new information which may help.

Here's the story, I'm negotiating to purchase a 1975 with an L-48 engine, automatic, with AC. The car does not have an Air Injection Pump and has an ID tag that says it is not in compliance with California emission standards.
The car did have a single catalytic converter with the split to dual pipes. The present owner changed that to a true dual exhaust sytem without any catalytic converters. I have looked at other 1975's that do have the air pump.

I plan to restore this car and am trying to comfirm the factory original setup. Thanks for your help. Bill

1975's Delivered to California may all have smog as I have never seen one.

        Bill and Lyle-----

For 1975, all Corvettes used the air injection reactor (AIR) system. For 1974, L-48s with federal emissions and THM did not use AIR and for 1976 only California L-48s with auto trans did use AIR, but for 1975 all Corvettes used AIR.

Do you mean that all 75's regardless of where delivered had air pumps?

Joe are you sure as the75-77 NCRS TIGM second edition page 82 says. ( Quote) All 1975-1977 Corvettes are equipped with an A.I.R. system in St. Louis with the exception of the 1975-1977 L48 with M-40 Turbo-Hydramatic Transmission. Give vehicles so equipped full credit.

I believe that the tech guide is incorrect on this one. I'm very sure of my information source. For 1975 there were 3 emissions certifications identified on the emissions control label. These were "AS", "DR", and "AU". All 3 utilized AIR.

That's correct; all 1975 Corvettes used the AIR emissions control system.

Joe The book is listing Emission Labels L-48 as WJ or AS L-82 as WK or AU. This item is judged by the chassis team and I am not on it as a rule but I may have some pictures of a Bow Tie 75.

"AS" was the emissions code label used for most 1975 L-48s, although "DR" may also have been used. "AU" was used for 1975 L-82s.

Emissions codes "WJ" and "WK" were 1973 emissions codes. Nevertheless, both were for AIR applications, too.

Joe I will talk to the team leader and make him aware their may be a problem and see what he says.

I have a 1974 that was delivered in Michigan with no AIR system and my wife has a 1975 Bowtie car delivered in North Carolina with the AIR system. Both are L48, air conditioned convertibles. If needed, I can provide more data in late May when I have access to the cars.

By the way, does the car still have an emissions sticker? If so, it will be located on the driver's side, just above the master cylinder area on the cowl. If so, what is the emissions code? It will be a 2 alpha-character code on the upper left corner of the sticker.

                            Bill:

If you can, get the engine suffix...CHB, CRJ AND CRK are reported to have NOT been equipped with A.I.R. I ran this by the team leader last fall and the 75 tech manual was just updated without mention of the 75 anomaly. I wouldn't run out and start adding and changing until I'm convinced it was equipped. Do exhaust manifold have plugs where pipes once were?

I'm of the view that manuals aren't necessarily always correct but best documented by field observations of obviously original cars configured to contradict published sources.

Just to note...PB is convinced all 75s came equipped with A.I.R. and may jump in here. I'm like the CSI guys...follow the evidence!
